Dr. Namie, sir, you are skidding down a slippery slope and losing all credibility with the ‘example’ used to illustrate bullying. The poor Congressman, “attacked” with “bully tactics” for as you say, “stating the simple truth” that Republicans are “knuckle dragging Neanderthals”? As a target- really this is your suggestion for me? …To stoop to childish, mean spirited name calling of my bully at work in order to stand up for myself? Really? I thought irrational name calling was what the bully does. The definition of Neanderthal, per Wikipedia, “The Neanderthal (pronounced /ni(ː)ˈændərtɑːl/, /ni(ː)ˈændərθɔːl/), or /neɪˈændərtɑːl/)[1], also spelled Neandertal[2], is an EXTINCT (emphasis mine) member of the Homo genus that is known from Pleistocene specimens found in Europe and parts of western and central Asia. “

This is the perfect example. i applaud what Grayson did in congress. he stood up for the little guy, the sick and those who can not stand up for themselves.

Dr. Namie, I came to this site looking for a little encouragement. It seemed promising at first, then I started to notice the clear (and unfortunate) political slant. What does one do when the “bully” is one of your beloved democrats (as is my bully)? One of the very things that I am being bullied about is my own relatively conservative stance, which has been leaked to this intolerant person, giving her something else to attack me with. Yet I heard the same type of name calling on these podcasts that I have heard at work. There is certainly no shortage of loudmouthed bullies in the democratic party that you could also use as examples, but instead you chose to alienate at least half of the people in this country rather that offer help that would be accessible to everyone. You really aren’t any different than anyone else – you have an agenda and mock those with whom you disagree. I’ll just keep looking after myself and endure the harassment at work.
    Thanks for nothing.

    • Dr. Gary Namie says:

Mike, You mistake our stance against abusive types with some sort of support for the dem party. Wrong. I stopped supporting those who can’t solve societal problems or who choose to belittle the working person while glorifying (and exorbitantly rewarding) executives. It’s clear that these trends are now clearly shared by both political parties. So, there is reason to distrust them both. It’s all about individuals. If you want a hero for the working class, try Kucinich in the House or Sanders in the Senate. Read their messages and they will resonate with our dignity for the worker position. Neither are mainstream dems. If you reject them reflexively, then you have been foxified and put politics above the problem you have at work that generates the health-harming stress. A politician’s support for our anti-bullying bill transcends simple labels of conservative or liberal, dem or repub. When they have experience witnessing it in their families, they endorse or even sponsor the bill. This is not theoretical, it has been our practice in the field since 2001 working with politicians, not just watching them on TV. So, don’t lecture me on the need to coddle conservatives lest they turn off. Their agenda is to mandate mediation when they have already won a fight. That style is identical to the workplace bully who enjoys sponsorship from the top. If you are truly bullied, read the hundreds of tutorials inside this site and in our book. You will find help and encouragement. If your own bias sets off alarms when you hear someone you admire criticized, don’t blame me. Few could be more disappointed than I with Emanuel, Geithner, Summers and the rest of the Clinton advisers who run the current Administration. Who on “your side” (if you believe I am on another) believes corporations should be curbed? GN

        Dr. Namie,
I’m not exactly sure what “foxified” means, but I have a pretty clear idea what it implies. Have you been “MSNBCified” or “CNNified” or “NPRified?” I don’t even watch Fox News, to be honest. And I am not any more or less “biased” than anyone else, including yourself. I came to this site because I was in need of encouragement, and found instead something different. I didn’t come to be lectured or to be thinly accused of being politically deficient because some of my beliefs contrasted your own. By the way, intellectual bullying is bullying, too. We must be careful about peering down our noses at people who are different from ourselves. I intend no disrespect, but you can’t win an intellectual dispute by simply assuming that I watch Glenn Beck (I don’t.) I feel sorry for you that you had to resort to insults rather than address my legitimate concerns. Take a look at the tone of your message to me, and tell me how I can interpret it as anything other than you being condescending. Good luck in your endeavors, and God bless you, but the type of help you offer seems to come with a requirement that I concede
my own beliefs and acknowledge your own as superior. I guess I don’t qualify.
I apologize if I have been rude, but I am disappointed. I’m just tired of everything having a political undercurrent.

    Hello,
I am Australian and currently work in China. I came across your website and it is good to know that workplace bullying is a world-wide phenomenon. However, after listening to this podcast, no one can deny that more than 50% of it is political or politically based.

People want solutions to their problems, and it is true that one of the solutions is via changes in workplace laws. However, this is not the forum to do it. This forum should be about helping people without a hidden agenda. Otherwise, this podcast really SHOULD be titled ‘ My view on calling out bullies in American politics’, in which case I wouldn’t have bothered to download the podcast and listen to it. But I guess you already know that…

I DO believe your website is useful though – but this should be a site that honours integrity without political agendas.
