a a target I found my only recourse was to expose the bullies to their superiors so that no one could claim they had no knowledge of the incidents. It has not been easy; I have suffered physically, psychologically and emotionally. My work relations have been impacted and my faith and trust in systems has been dismantled irrepairably. I wrote “How organizations empower the bully boss:a criminal in the workplace” now on amazon.com, in an effort to detail the HUMAN toll and organizational costs of bully bosses. It will take many workers standing up and saying NO MORE harassment in the workplace. Recognizing that many of these bully bosses are psychopathic, means also recognizing they are dangerous and will not stop unless forced to stop. Organizations must accept responsibility and acknowledge complaints objectively and investigate instead of putting their heads in the sand.
I’m delighted that the psychology community is recognizing this workplace scourge. In dealing with union reps, one siginficant problem is making sure that counselors we refer our injured workers to comprehend the dynamics and damage of bullies in the workplace. Greater understanding of the problem can help to insure more knowledgeable therapists. Thanks Gary and Ruth for your leadership over so many years to accomplish this.
I am incredibly interested to learn more about this particular topic, both as a student concentrating on my MA in Forensic Psychology, as well as a personal current victim of severe workplace bullying. The particular bullying / harassment I encounter daily at work has been continuing for the past three years, and I feel there is nothing that can cease it.
