California Cities & Counties Recognized Freedom From Workplace Bullies Week

Tuesday, October 24th, 2017

The California Healthy Workplace Advocates, CHWA, is one of the most active state-based groups in the nation. They are volunteer citizen lobbyists for the WBI anti-bullying Healthy Workplace Bill. They have members statewide. Monthly meetings are held in Sacramento. Details here.)

WBI established Freedom Week from Workplace Bullies Week, the third week in October during Domestic Violence Awareness and Bullying Prevention Month. CHWA routinely solicits proclamations from California cities and counties that declare the municipalities’ endorsement of the following principles:
• government has an interest in promoting the social and economic well-being of its citizens
• that well-being depends upon the existence of healthy and productive employees working in safe and abuse-free work environments
• abusive work environments are costly for employers with consequences including reduced productivity, absenteeism, turnover, injuries
• protection from abusive work environments should apply to every worker, and not be limited to legally protected class status based only on race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability

Webinar for HR: When the workplace bully is the boss

Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Wednesday Feb. 11 Webinar for Employers & HR
2 pm EST, 60 minutes
A joint production of the Workplace Bullying Institute and Biz21 Publishing

When the Bully is the Boss

Many companies assume they don’t have a bullying problem. Employees get along. In meetings, team members respect each other. But look closer. You might find that the bully is the very person you would expect your employees to turn to if they are being bullied—the boss.

Some managerial bullying is unintentional — supervisors see themselves as “demanding results.” Other times bosses know their behavior crosses the line, but don’t care.
Not convinced? Consider the slew of new state laws protecting workers against bullying. And consider the number of companies that have rushed to adopt anti-bullying policies and procedures for investigating complaints.

The costs are real. The employee’s health can suffer, causing missed work, higher healthcare costs and reduced productivity. Bullied employees are also a flight risk, as are those who witness bullying. And there’s the threat of lawsuits against the company.

In this session, Dr. Gary Namie will teach you:

• How to recognize and respond to a bully boss
• What differentiates “bullying” from other conduct- both illegal (discrimination) and legal (non-abusive disagreements)
• Why the workplace climate may be allowing the bully to prosper
• Why owners and executives often tend to defend bullies
• How to build an abuse-intolerant, accountable culture for all employees, regardless of rank
• How to measure outcomes of anti-bullying activities that benefit both employees and the company.

Sports Lawyers to learn about workplace bullying

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Sports Lawyers Association 40th Conference 2014 ChicagoThis week, the Sports Lawyers Association (SLA) hosts its 40th annual conference in Chicago. Attendees include attorneys associated with all major professional sports leagues, universities and agents for pro athletes.

Presenting details about the Jonathan Martin/Miami Dolphins bullying case are Wm. David Cornwell, Sr., Gordon & Rees, LLP and Dr. Gary Namie, Director, Workplace Bullying Institute. Both Mr. Cornwell and Dr. Namie were retained to assist Mr. Martin. The NFL investigation, conducted by attorney Ted Wells and its report released on Feb. 14, 2014, incorporated facts about workplace bullying conveyed to Mr. Wells by Dr. Namie.

This is a challenging time for professional sports. All are reacting to racism and off-field abusive conduct.

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Nov. 25 UPDATE: We are 40% of the way toward our goal — 65 donors — 49 days remain

Our last national survey on workplace bullying was done in 2010. The WBI is currently seeking donations to fund a new 2014 U.S. Workplace Bullying Survey. The goal is modest (you can give a small amount and still make it happen).
